Steelworks Design takes pride each year in putting their expertise to the test in creating a special tree for Peterborough's Festival of Trees. This year the staff at Steelworks created a real "Dream Machine" where ball bearings are carried to the top of the tree and then released to find their way down through a series of structures. Like its famous ancestor, the Toot Sweet Machine made famous in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the tree was a delight to the thousands of youngsters that visited the Festival this year.
Now in its 15th year the Peterborough Festival of Trees launches the holiday season for the citizens of Peterborough and the surround areas while raising valuable dollars that support health care in the community. In 2004, $300,000 was added to the ongoing total of $3.8 million, which was raised over the years.
Golfing for Sick Kids
This summer Steelworks Design was a major sponsor of a golf tournament that raised money for the James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research at SickKids. The staff at Steelworks all volunteered to coordinate the event and some risked potential embarrassment by playing.
Since James Birrells's death in 2001, The James Fund has become Canada's leading neuroblastoma (rare and deadly form of cancer) initiative and has helped SickKids Hospital become a significant player in neuroblastoma research globally. James Birrell was a Peterborough child.
Keeping the Music Coming
The Peterborough Singers is one of Canada's most successful community choirs. Last year they came second in the CBC competition and they have, for the last 10 years, performed to packed houses and enriched the cultural life of the community. Now embarking on a major fund raising drive, Steelworks Design president Don Barnet is a spokesman for the campaign.
