There's always something new at Steelworks Design!

Steelworks Design wins Peterborough Business Excellence Awards

In October 2008, Steelworks Design was the recipient of 2 “Business Excellence” awards at the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner. We were recognized for Excellence in the following categories:

    - Entrepreneurial Spirit over 4 years in business – for leadership in the development of the Peterborough Oil Sands Consortium, “Made in Peterborough”, excellence in growth, diversity, export and increased sales.

    - Manufacturing – under 50 employees - for the development of the Quick Change Technology for Honda, CWB certification and Nuclear Quality Program implementation.

    Heading Out West

In March 2008, Steelworks Design joined a group of 4 other local businesses and the GPA EDC to attend the National Buyer Seller Forum in Edmonton, Alberta. This was an eye-opening event for the Peterborough Group. Steelworks was fortunate to secure two one-on-one appointments with large Oil Sands Buyers in March. Out of these meetings came the opportunity to return to Alberta at a later date to present detailed capabilities of Steelworks and some of our local collaborative partners.

On On June 10th, Rhonda and Don Barnet of Steelworks Design, and Ian Kirkland of Kirkland Engineering, travelled to Calgary to attend the Global Petroleum Conference and review the Peterborough Oil Sands Consortium concept with a major player in the Alberta Oil Sands. "Peterborough has an exceptional talent pool of engineers and steel fabricators which we hope to bring together in collaboration to bid on some very large projects in the west," says Ms. Barnet. Rhonda Barnet has been working in collaboration with the GPA EDC, MP Dean Del Mastro, and several staff from the Ontario Ministry to understand what it will take to form the Peterborough Oil Sands Consortium. "It was decided in preliminary meetings that the first step would be to secure a large project where one local firm (ie. Steelworks Design) would work in collaboration with other local engineering firms and steel fabricators to bid on a large project," says Barnet. "We have been invited to look at a very substantial project with one of the major players in the West."

We are very excited to have the opportunity to take the 'Made in Peterborough' Campaign to this next level of collaboration. The Ontario Manufacturing sector is gearing up to support overflow work in the west, and Peterborough is taking a leadership role in forming partnerships in the west. Laura Lauzon of GPA EDC is already working on an in-bound mission to bring buyers from Alberta into Peterborough to look at our manufacturing and engineering capabilities. Peterborough has the unique advantage of already working in collaboration rather than with a group of fierce competitors.

MADE IN PETERBOROUGH CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS AREA MANUFACTURERS IN ALBERTA OIL SANDS BID

[PETERBOROUGH] The Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC) is attending the National Buyer Seller Forum (NBSF) this week in Edmonton. Through the "Made In Peterborough" manufacturing marketing campaign, the GPA EDC is supporting five area manufacturers in their bid to secure oil sands opportunities at this large national procurement show.

The National Buyer Seller Forum, March 25th and 26th, is a joint initiative between government and industry that works to connect oil sands and oil sands-related buyers with potential suppliers from across Canada.

Andy Mitchell, GPA EDC President & CEO said "Participation in this forum is a good example of the GPA EDC being proactive in seeking new opportunities for area businesses in order to create wealth and jobs for the people of the Peterborough Region."

The GPA EDC has secured a booth at the trade show component of the forum to promote our region's manufacturers and specifically support the manufacturers attending the show in their efforts to become suppliers.

There are more than 130 delegates from the Province of Ontario representing the provincial government, municipalities and private business owners. Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro is also in attendance.

The day prior to the Forum opening, Peterborough participants took advantage of free Ontario government sessions including a tour of industrial parks, an "oil upgrader" facility, expansion updates from Shell Canada and other companies, and education sessions such as "Doing Business in Alberta."

A key component of the NBSF is to obtain one on one pre-arranged appointments with procurement professionals during the Forum. Participants can also attend sessions such as "Canadian Solutions to Alberta's Supply Chain Challenges" and "17 Billion Dollars in Alberta Infrastructure Projects".

"This is a means to help our region's manufacturers get to where the opportunities are," said Laura Lauzon, GPA EDC Manager of Business Retention. "Not only are they able to make connections with Alberta companies, but they are also able to interact with other Ontario companies who are also attending. Business can be done with oil companies, project management companies or by becoming a sub-contractor to existing suppliers."

The National Buyer Seller Forum runs until Thursday, March 27th.

    Steelworks Open House Well Attended

On March 4th, 2008 Steelworks Design hosted its first Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours Open House. By all reports it was one of the largest turn outs for this monthly event ever! It was a most informative tour, showcasing the many facets of this diverse company.

This tour gave a small glimpse into the vast scope of the engineering, automation and fabrication company. °It's quite amazing, and another good example of an innovative local company, said Stu Harrison, Manger of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce.
